Prof. Subhajit Bandyopadhyay


Prof. Subhajit Bandyopadhyay did his M.Sc from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur. He did his doctoral research under the supervision of Professor Reginald Mitchell at University of Victoria, British Columbia.This was followed by a postdoctoral position with Professor Ron Breslow at Columbia University. He spent a year with Prof. Florian Hollfelder at the University of Cambridge before joining IISER Kolkata as an Assistant Professor. His research interests cover the synthesis and studies of photochromic systems, optical sensors for biologically relevant analytes, machine learning, photo controlled catalysis, and smartphone chemistry. Currently he is a Professor at IISER Kolkata. He has been awarded as the Fellow of Royal Society of Chemistry (2022). Prof. Bandyopadhyay led the Indian National Team as the Head Mentor, under his leadership India performed exceptionally well at the 58th International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) 2026 held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan from 10 to 19 July 2026, with all four students bagging Gold Medals. Prof. Bandyopadhyay has also been awarded with the prestigious CRSI Bronze Medal for the year 2027.
